Do I need to be in Scouting to participate in the derby?
No. Anyone 8 years old and older as of race date can participate. Interest usually drops off around 14 years old however circumstances can arise where older youth may still wish to race.
Is there a starter kit, if so then what is in it and how much does it cost?
No, we no longer have starter kits to offer. For information, see the Starter Kit page.
What kind of wheels are acceptable?
The only approved wheels for the Clover Valley (and some other derbies) are the ones that are supplied by the derby or bought from the specific supplier. There are many wheels sold in department and building stores that are very similar but have subtle differences that make them illegal. It is imperative that all wheels come from a single source. The derby sells wheels at $10.00 each. That is less than what they cost us in bulk from the supplier; but if you insist on buying them yourself, the importer/supplier is: Can-Am Casters & Wheels 1406 Pender St. East Vancouver, BC V5L 1V8 (604) 517-5858 The wheels are 10 X 1.75 - F with 5/8'' bearings in offset hubs. They are silver/grey in colour. The only variance from this is that the original wheels (with ½'' bearings) are allowed on cars built prior to 1999. NO OTHER WHEELS OR BEARINGS ARE ALLOWED. Wheel modifications are not permitted. See item 1) under "Building Rules and Regulations" in the Builder's Manual for details.
What power's the car's?
Gravity and the natural slope of the hill only. No additional force can be used.
Do I need to provide a sponsor and where does the money go? How do I get one?
We are a not-for-profit organization and the car sponsorships provide the funds that are needed to run the derby. If for some reason you are not able to provide a sponsor, you will still be able to race, however from experience we have found that just about everyone is able to find at least one sponsor. You may be surprised where sponsors can be found. You auto insurance offices often have money that is set aside specifically for community events. Employers or their suppliers and customers are often willing to help out as well. Familiarize yourself with what the sponsors get in return by taking a look at the "Sponsor Us" page on the website before approaching a potential sponsor. Chances are that anyone you talk to will either have Scouting experience or will be familiar with it in some way and are aware of its benefits. Often, the mention of a "Scouting event for kids" will go a long way in convincing a prospective sponsor. Remember, a couple of $50 sponsors are just as helpful as one $100 sponsor. If you still have problems, give one of the committee members a call for assistance.
